‘Neo’ means ‘new’, and ‘plasm’ comes from a word that means ‘shape’. In dermatology, a neoplasm is something that has grown on your skin that shouldn’t be there, an aggregation of cells that serves no purpose. It’s a synonym for ‘tumor’. A neoplasm can be benign, like a wart, or malignant, like a cancer growth. Two examples of cancerous neoplasms in skin are carcinoma and melanoma.
